Marketing with blogs is a method of marketing your expertise to a very specific audience. You become a subject matter expert that people look to for advice. The requirements are that if you start down this path, you need to keep going in order to get any following and be very good at it.

How does this turn into revenue? Effective writing skills will generate more interest, the readers you will command need compelling, current and insightful topics. The subject is not you, it's not a place to put your ego. Successful blogging is about doing this successfully each time. It all equates into increased traffic.

If you are a consultant (and blogs are great for consultants) you can slowly ask people to sign up for personal consulting, which you can earn revenue from. Blogs are also good for having open question and answer sessions about your products or processes.
